Stora Enso has published its Circularity Plan, aligned with the first version of the Global Circularity Protocol for Business, and introduced a new target to increase material circularity in its direct operational control.

The plan outlines the company’s approach to advancing circularity, including target setting and the integration of circular economy principles into its strategy and daily operations.

Hitting The Target

Stora Enso has set a new target to achieve 90 percent material circularity in its direct operations by 2030, up from a baseline of 79 percent in 2025. The target reflects an expanded and more holistic approach, combining circular design, operational efficiency, and value chain collaboration to optimize the use of resources and minimize waste. It replaces the company’s previous technical recyclability target, which is now included as part of the broader material circularity metric.

The Global Circularity Protocol, launched in 2025 by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in collaboration with industry and non-governmental organizations, provides a consistent and transparent framework for measuring and reporting circularity.
