Siegwerk, a global provider of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels, has strengthened its long-standing partnership with premium food packaging manufacturer The Revere Group.
By switching to Siegwerk’s low-migration SICURA Nutriflex ORBIS DC inks, faster press speeds, improved uptime, and consistent Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) printing were enabled. The Revere Group also saw reduced waste and more easily supported customer-focused sustainability goals.
The Revere Group, a fourth-generation, family-owned company located in Seattle, Washington, uses advanced ECG printing to reproduce over 90 percent of Pantone colors accurately and repeatably with seven instead of four inks. Meanwhile, the converter minimizes the need for clean-ups between print jobs.
SICURA Nutriflex ORBIS DC inks can be cured with both UV and LED lamps, which not only maximizes operational flexibility but also supports sustainability efforts.
Beyond performance improvements for food packaging applications, the collaboration has also opened up new opportunities in sustainable packaging for The Revere Group. Through close technical exchange and access to Siegwerk’s global expertise, the company has expanded its capabilities through the use of special primers for compostable applications and recyclable mono-material structures. These innovations have enabled the creation of new sustainable packaging options.
In other news, Siegwerk is systematically adapting its portfolio to meet the requirements of the German Printing Ink Ordinance (GIO). While the regulation’s enforcement has been postponed to January 2027, Siegwerk already offers GIO-compliant printing solutions for selected food packaging applications.
Set to better protect consumer health, the GIO aims to limit the migration of potentially hazardous substances from printed packaging into food products. Despite its name, the German Printing Ink Ordinance does not only apply to printing inks but to all printed food contact materials where a transfer of substances from the printed layer to the food cannot be excluded.
To meet the new requirements, Siegwerk is continuously working to convert relevant ink, coating, and varnish formulations to ensure GIO-compliance. This includes, for example, the UV flexo ink series SICURA Nutriflex 10 and the dual-cure series SICURA Nutriflex LEDTec and Sicura Nutriflex Orbis Dual Cure that can be cured with both LED-UV and UV mercury lamps. These low-migration ink series are suitable for processing on all types of in-line label or packaging printing machines on a wide range of substrates and enable the printing of GIO-compliant primary food packaging. Other examples of Siegwerk’s GIO-ready portfolio include SICURA Nutriflex OPVs, the company’s low-migration overprint varnishes for sensitive packaging applications.
