UK based packaging company DS Smith has created a corrugated packaging solution for Dutch company Geefeenboompje.nl, which specializes in gifting trees to commemorate occasions, such as births. The custom e-commerce packaging was designed to improve both product protection and overall packaging performance.
“The strength of DS Smith lies in their ability to think and conceptualize along with you, and they fully understand what is needed now and equally importantly, the challenges that an expanding business will face in a few years’ time,” said Remko Slokkers, co-founder of Geefeenboompje.nl.
According to DS Smith, the redesigned packaging improves supply chain efficiency while helping reduce overall costs. Using a die-cut design, the company incorporated strategically placed air holes to provide better ventilation for the trees during transit.
“The improved packaging and material usage enhance the efficiency of the packing process and support a more streamlined supply chain approach. It turned out to be financially uninteresting to look only at the price of a box. By placing our focus on process optimization, we achieve greater savings in storage, handling, and labor. The original box was cheaper, but less efficient,” Slokkers added.
Constructed from fully recyclable materials, the packaging also enhances the customer experience. DS Smith noted that the exterior can be customized with branding, logos, and personalized messages, while customers also have the option of adding a paper-based sleeve.
The company said the fiber-based packaging complements the tree gifts by creating a cohesive appearance and unboxing experience that reinforces Geefeenboompje.nl’s brand identity and message.
Geefeenboompje.nl describes its tree gifts as symbols of growth and development. In addition to individual trees, the company offers gift sets and letterbox-friendly tree growing kits, and says it has contributed to the planting of more than 300,000 trees.
