The 9th Annual Independents’ Cup Charity Golf Tournament, held during the AICC Spring Meeting in Miami, FL, was a wonderful and profitable networking event with record-breaking attendance. Played on the Golden Palm and Red Tiger courses at the Trump National Doral, the Tournament boasted 240 players who helped raise $30,000 for the Foundation for Packaging Education.

Participants enjoyed challenging courses, good company, and perfect weather. Adding to the fun, golfers were challenged to shoot a golf ball with an air cannon. Congratulations to Steve Lynn of Durst and Adam Pauwels of Atlantic Packaging Products for shooting the two closest to the pins.

The first-place team on the Red Tiger course was Mike Butler, Domtar; Mark McNay, SMC Packaging Group; Tom Phillips, Bobst; and Kevin Miller, Royal Group/Schwarz Partners. 

Cade Haglund, Central Package & Display; Paige Haglund, Central Package & Display; Austin Umlauf, Haire Group; Olivia Umlauf, Haire Group were the first place team on the Golden Palm Course. 

Additional winning teams were: Red Tiger Course, Second Place: Chase Haddon, Packaging-Atlanta; Peter Haddon, Packaging-Atlanta; John Harris, J.M. Fry Company; and Rob Zacary, Air Systems Design.

Third Place: Tom Bradford, Bradford Company; Kevin Collins, Huston Patterson/Lewisburg Printing Co.; Kirk Kelso, Huston Patterson/Lewisburg Printing Co.; and Nathan Pajka, Metsa Board.

Golden Palm Course, Second Place: Max Cote, Kruger Packaging; Drew Eastwood, Central Group; Victor Jorges, PTI; and Stephen Moore, Moore Packaging.

Third Place: Garrett Bradley, American Box; Danny Lopez, Haire Group; Michael Mulroe, Haire Group; and Sean Peickert, Haire Group.

Contest holes were won by Warren Pearce, Proprint Services; Brant Dixon, AG Stacker; Ryan Clark, Kolbus America; Warren Pearce, Proprint Services; Jeff Pollack, Valco Melton; Paige Haglund, Central Package & Display; Bill Baumgartner, Bradford Company; and Mike Mulroe, Haire Group.

The designated charity for this tournament, the Foundation for Packaging Education, will contribute to the costs associated with developing training and education for the industry. About the purpose of the Foundation, Gary Brewer, President, Package Crafters, said “It’s workforce development. That’s what we’re after here. We want to be an attractive industry. We want to have people say, ‘What is the packaging industry all about?’”

The 10th Annual Independents’ Cup will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2024, in conjunction with the AICC Spring Meeting and 50th Anniversary Celebration at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort.
